Fall is officially here and cooler weather will be here before you know it. It’s time to start packing up the patio furniture and getting your backyard oasis ready for the change in seasons.
October is a great time to start putting your patio furniture away for the winter. Cleaning your furniture before you store it will keep it in great condition. Plus, it will be clean and ready to go when you’re ready to bring it out next spring.
Use a dry cloth to wipe away the dust, pollen and spider webs. Your patio furniture is designed to withstand the elements and as long as you keep it nice, it should be fairly easy to clean. Once you’ve wiped it off, take a rag or sponge soaked in warm, soapy water to remove any stubborn dirt or residue.
Storing your furniture in a covered location is ideal. Once it’s dry, cover it with a sturdy cover or tarp. If moisture is a concern, elevate furniture with a piece of wood or a recycled pallet to keep it off the floor.
Next, turn your attention to any cushions. Some cushions can be tossed in your washer for a quick and easy cleaning, but others might lose their shape during the spin cycle. Check any tags to see what the recommended washing protocol is. Washing them by hand might be the safest bet.
Let cushions air dry completely before you pack them away for the winter. Storing them in large plastic containers will keep them safe from any pests or moisture. You can also place cushions in large garbage bags and secure them for quick and easy storage.
